How My Son Turns Everyday Moments Into Adventures: Creative Play for Energetic Kids

Toys were never really her son’s cup of tea—at least not in the traditional sense. Unless they were out and about, he didn’t show much interest in sitting down with typical toys. What truly captured his attention? Bikes, Hot Wheels, monster trucks, tools, and his endlessly creative little mind.

She loves freezing trucks, dinosaurs—really anything—into blocks of ice and handing him tools to “rescue” them. Painter’s tape becomes roads for his trucks, and popsicle sticks turn into bridges. He even came up with his own game and she pretends to call him with all kinds of “emergencies”—like a flipped-over monster truck that needs towing or a load of laundry that magically needs putting away.

He’s so different from their daughter, who would sit quietly and play for hours on her own. Her son needed a bit of guidance to discover how he liked to play—but it was just a learning curve. Now, watching him create his own kind of fun is one of her favorite things.
