A Heartfelt Home Birth Story: Telling the Kids, Father’s Day Surprise, and Welcoming Our Rainbow Baby

She told her boys right away. They had come with her to the doctor appointments, knowing that the baby needed to grow strong but also understanding, in their own way, that their mommy had lost babies before, little ones now in heaven. So they prayed, together, that this baby would keep growing.

Her first son was just 12 months old when she told him about the new baby. She wasn’t sure how much he understood, being so young, but he was at home when the birth happened.

Her second son was right by her side when she saw the positive pregnancy test for their third child. She had to gently tell him to keep it a secret. He was 2 and a half at the time, and her eldest was 4.

It was just four days before Father’s Day. She had the boys help prepare a special surprise for their dad. They handed him a gift, and then a homemade card. Inside the card, she had taped an hCG test.

He smiled and said, “Awww, thank you guys,” but then saw the look on her face. He took another look at the test, and his eyes went wide. “WHAT?! Really?!??”

She was so glad they had waited to tell him on Father’s Day. It made the moment all the more special.

A few weeks ago, she gave birth at home in a Freebirth, just her husband and herself. The boys, now 5 and 3, were home too. She and her husband made it very clear to them beforehand: this baby was God’s, and anything could happen. But the boys weren’t scared or worried. They were calm, present, and ready.

The birth aside from the pain was beautiful. And their baby girl, a complete surprise, was finally in their arms.
