Helping Young Children Understand Miscarriage: A Mother’s Story of Love, Loss, and Sweet Support

She had a 3-year-old and a toddler just 18 months old when she found out she was pregnant again. From the very beginning, she told her 3-year-old that there was a baby in Mommy’s belly. Her daughter was excited, full of questions and wonder.

But in January, she miscarried.

When it started happening, she sat down with her daughter and gently explained that there was a boo-boo and that the baby had gone to be with Jesus. Her little girl, only three, responded with the kind of sweetness that only young children can offer. She wanted to help. She would bring Mommy new pads and sit quietly, knowing something had changed but offering love the only way she knew how.

Looking back, she knew it would have been so much harder if they hadn’t told her about the baby. Not only would explaining the “boo-boo” have been more confusing, but she would have missed out on the tenderness and comfort her daughter gave so naturally.
